„Sharebus“ Brisbane – Cairns in 17 days

Still in Germany I already started to look for travelmates on facebook. As you know I have been traveling with a few different travelmates during the past weeks, which I knew from facebook. I read about „Sharebus“ on facebook during my search. They offer different trips through Australia on there website. In my case it was the trip from

  • Brisbane to Cairns
  • 17 days
  • 700$ rent for the van and trailer incl. Camping and cooking gear, fuel, ferry to Magnetic Island and one night in a Hostel in Cairns
  • Up to 12 people

After I had said goodbye to my last travelmates when we got back from Fraser Island I spend a few days in Hervey Bay and was not sure what I wanted to do next. I made a list with all options I had and decided to drive with the bus back to Brisbane and jump on the trip with Sharebus.

I expected the trip to be great and it was even better.

Two days before the trip started we had a barbeque to get to know the other people. We were four germans, three french people, two from spain and two canadiens. Seven girls and two guys. All between 18 and 27 years old. A  nice group for sure. Before we started two days later we got a guidebook fro Sharebus with information and recommendations for hikes, camping grounds and a lot more.

The first days were a little bit chaotic until we found out were everything in the van was, were to put our bags and how we want to organise things like cooking, setting up the tents and planning were to go next. We had 5 tents but after the first night we decided that we would all fit into 3 tents so we didn`t have to set up that many. In the next 17 days we all became very good friends. We managed long days and nights with heavy rain, had breakfast in front oft he supermarket on the parking ground, got a lot of mosquito bites, almost drove over some cows standing on the street, we cooked together or everyone for themself, brought the trailer tot he workshop, almost missed the ferry to Magnetic Island and missed the ferry from Fraser Island back to the mainland. We went hiking, shopping and partying. Decided not to havea shower to have more time at the beach. We  met a lot of people and just got all very close to each other.

One of the first things I noticed was how nice it is to have the same say in things as everyone else. If you find travelmates over social media it`s not always like that. Especially it they had there own car and I just joined there trip.

I guess if you are in a group there is always going to be a group leader after some time. It took a few days until it was sure that one oft he guys and me are doing most oft he organising and planning stuf fand everyone asked us if they had questions to were we would go text or what the plan fort he next destination is.

Now I want to tell a little bit about the most beautiful days we had during the trip.

One oft he most beautiful days was in Noosa Heads. It was perfect weather and the plan was to do the Coastal track and the keep driving tot he next destination. I had done it before but this time was special. After the first hundred meters we spot my first wild koala sitting in the tree right over our heads. I was already happy with this and didn`t expect anything more from the day but it just keeped beeing awesome. We spend a long time just watching the surfers surfing massive waves towards the rocks, we got completly wet from the waves smashing against the rocks at the fairy pools and watched two dolphines jumping behind the surfers towards the sunset. It was wonderfull and none of us wanted to leave. I could have stayed here for hours, watching the surfers and the colours changing during sunset.

As I had already been on Fraser Island for a week I decided not to join the group to go there for two days. I brought everyone to the rental company fort he 4 wheel drives and then spend to nice days in Hervey Bay on my own, sleept in the back oft he car, went tot he beach and enjoyed some amazing sunrise and sunsets. As the group managed to miss there ferry from fraser Island back they got back very late.

The next day we wanted to drive 700km to Cape Hillsborough to see the kangurus at the beach in the next morning. That day nothing worked how it should have worked. When we went to do our laundry all the washing machines and dryers in that place where broken wo we put all the dirty and wet cloth in the van and started driving. After some time driving the lock oft he backdoor brook and we needed to tie the door onto the trailer. Later that day the credit card we got to pay the petrol broke as well. Sometime in the middle oft he night weh ad all our stuff washed and were ready to go. When we got to Cape Hilsborough at 3:30am we took our sleeping bags, went down tot he beach and waited for sunrise.

As the sun made slowly her way over the horizon all the kangurus and wallabies came down tot he beach. It was beautiful.

When we layed down at the lagoon in Airlie Beach I had still no idea how my next days would look like. From here you can go tot he Whitesunday Islands which all of us wanted to do. The most famous way to get there ist o hop on an overnight sailingtour which is quiet expensive and you spend most oft he time on the boat. I wanted to spent as much time as possible at the worldfamous Whitehaven Beach. I found a watertaxi which takes you there and you can camp on the beach fort he Nationalpark fee. Luckily Lenni had already booked a sailingtour for may and didn’t want to do the same thing twice. It was almost sunset when Lenni decided to join me fort he campingtrip and we even decided to go fort wo nights. I couldn’t have been happier.

Within a couple of minutes I booked everything: Watertaxi, camping and the hostel fort he night in Airlie Beach. The most spontanious action I have ever done.

A few girls from our Group wanted tot o skydiving the next morning and had already booked the hostel. After Lenni and I booked as well everyone else decided to stay in the hostel with us instead of driving tot he next freecamp. The Hostel had there own open air bar and dancefloor and we all went dancing together even though weh ad to wake up at 5:30am the next morning.

Time for a little adventure. As we arrived at the pier with the local bus the sun made it`s way over the horizon. The watertaxi stopped at a few beaches, dropped some people off and picked other people up and gave us the opportunity to jump from the boat and have a look around. At 9am the boat left both of us with all our stuff at a completly empty whitehaven beach. We set up our tent a meter from the beach in the shadow oft he trees.

The beach was white and soft, the water cristal clear and we couldn`t believe this would be our home fort he next days. Beside of a couple of hours a day when the sailing boats came tot he beach, the beach was ours. We felt like in heaven. In the morning we went up a little hill behind the beach to watch the sun rising, swimming in this beautiful water, walking along the beach and watching the stars in the night.

What we didn´t want to miss was the famous Hill Inlet Lookout. To get there we walked 10km on the beach until we got to the Inlet weh ad to pass. We had to almost swimm through it because evenduring low tide it`s very deep. The Lookout was incredible and both of us wished weh ad more time but we knew that the tide would come in soon and we wouldn`t be able to cross the inlet.

Our little adventure was over way to early. There are no words to describe how blessed we felt. When the watertaxi picked us up the next day weh ad no idea how many waves would crush over the little boat and make us completly wet. It was the most fun though and the perfect ending of our little trip.

Macnetic Island surprised all of us. We expected two days on a boring Island and had the two most amazing, adventurous and funniest days that made us become closer friends then ever bevor. We all spent the morning chilling in the hostel. Everyone wanted to do something but no one knew what to do. Finally we all jumped in the car and started driving. After cruising around for half an hour without knowing where to go we parked and went on The Forts walk.

Most of us a little bit tipsy we danced the whole way around, climbed on rocks and ruines to get incredible views over the island. I can only speak for myself when I say I felt like a little kid playing and climbing in the woods. In the evening we played group games in the hostel. As we where a lot of people we split up in groups. So we played for each other and against each other at the same time. Everyone joined the games and we had a lot of fun. We danced and laught the whole night. After this night we where closer then ever bevore

There are only a few spots between Brisbane and Cairns where I want to go again someday. Wallaman Falls is one of these spots. We got there one hour before sunset what is far to little time for this waterfall. I really wanted to see the waterfall from the top and from the bottom. To get to the bottom it`s 300metres in height for a 2km walk, which makes the path very steep. We run down as fast as possible to get tot he bottom before it was dark. We and our cameras where completely wet before we even got there. It was breathtaking to stand there and watch the water crashing onto the rocks.

Just before we made our way to Cairns we needed to go tot he mechanic to get the sitedoor of the trailer fixed. So we left the trailer at the mechanic and spend some beautifule hours at mission beach. The beach is beautiful with a lot of coconut palms. Since I had my first coconut at Cape Hillsborough I am in love with coconuts. We managed to open one oft hem only buy smashing it on a wooden board a few times. It was delicious.

In total we drove 3143km with the van before we got to Cairns. The first night in Cairns was already booked for us in Dreamtime Travellers Rest. The Hostel is one oft he most expensive ones in Cairns but after the first night here we all stayed fort he whole time we where in Cairns.

The Trip was over but the journey continued as we all stayed in the hostel. We went out together, shared rooms for weeks or only a few days before we had to say goodbye. Some of us continued traveling together.

For me personally this was one oft he greatest trips I ever had, I met beautiful people and I would do everything to see my friends again. After sharing so much over a much longer time then just the 17 days oft he trip and sharing so much more then just the tripit`s hard to say goodbye. Can`t wait form y next trip with sharebus. See you next time.
